Harry Bruce, Ph.D., je profesorem a bývalým děkanem informační školy na Washingtonské univerzitě. Ve výzkumu se zajímá o informační chování, vyhledávání informací, správu osobních informací a síťová informační prostředí. Je autorem mnoha publikací zaměřujících se na informační chování a informační vědu.

Život a kariéra

Harry Bruce vyrůstal v Austrálii. Studoval na Charles Sturt University, jeho studia jej dále zavedla přes Macquarie University na University of Technology Sydney, kterou nejenže absolvoval, ale také zde začal působit jako lektor. Vypracoval se až na pozici vedoucího katedry informačních studií. [1]
Studovat ale nepřestal, diplomová práce s názvem "A user oriented view of Internet as information infrastructure" mu v roce 1996 získala doktorát na University of New South Wales a o rok později mu za ni The Information Association for the Information Age udělila cenu za disertační práci roku 1997.[2]

Harry v New Yorku

V roce 1998 byl Harry osloven americkým časopisem Journal of the American Society for Information Science. Byl prvním absolventem University of Technology Sydney, který v tomto žurnálu publikoval.[3] Nenechal si ujít šanci a v témže roce odjel do Seattlu, kde se právě díky výzkumu pro tento článek setkal kromě jiných osobností svého oboru také s Mikem Eisenbergem, tehdejším děkanem knihovnické a informační fakulty Washingtonské univerzity. Harry se posléze vrátil do Austrálie, kde jej Mike navštívil během svého sabatiklu, vedli spolu krátký kurz informační vědy v Sydney a velmi brzy se spřátelili. Po Mikeově návratu zpět do USA zůstali nadále v kontaktu prostřednictvím The Palace, počítačového programu vytvářejícího grafický chatroom. Právě díky této aplikaci později dospěli k dohodě, že se Harry i s manželkou Lorraine a dvěma dcerami přestěhuje do New Yorku, kde měl Harry Mikeovi pomoct s transformací knihovnického oboru na moderní informační školu.[4]

Začínaje na pozici pomocného ředitele Harry stoupal ve funkci, až se v roce 2006 po odstoupení Mikea Eisenberga sám stal děkanem. [5]
V této funkci setrval téměř jedenáct let, nyní mu skončilo druhé pětileté volební období[6] a chystá se do důchodu.[7]

Dr. Bruce výzkum byl financován National Science Foundation, Ústavu muzea a knihovnických služeb (IMLS), Státní knihovna ve Washingtonu, a australskou odboru zaměstnanosti vzdělávání a odborné přípravy.
