Marchionini v knize jednoduše vysvětluje 5 způsobů pojetí informace s důrazem na to, jak byli ovlivněny digitálními technologiemi – Informace jako myšlení a paměť, informace jako komunikační proces, informace jako artefakt, informace jako energie a informace jako identita v kyberprostoru: pátý hlas. Kniha je nejvíce zaměřená na poslední význam informace, tedy identitu v kyberprostoru. Kniha je strukturována do kapitol a je velmi snadno pochopitelná i přes to, že je&nbsp; psaná anglicky (není přeložená do češtiny). Gary Marchionini  je profesorem informační vědy, který se zabývá mj. vyhledáváním informací, HCI (Human-computer interaction) a informační architekturou. V současnosti je navíc děkanem oddělení Informační vědy a knihovnictví na University of North Carolina v Chapel Hill.

Jeho aktuální zájmy a projekty se vztahují k rozhraní, které podporují vyhledávání informací a získávání informací; využitelnost osobních zdravotních záznamů; strategii multimediálního prohlížení; digitální knihovny; informační architekturu; osobní identitu v kyberprostoru; a zhodnocení interaktivních médií, zejména pro studium a výuku.[4]

Information concepts: from books to cyberspace identities

Marchionini v knize jednoduše vysvětluje 5 způsobů pojetí informace s důrazem na to, jak byli ovlivněny digitálními technologiemi – Informace jako myšlení a paměť, informace jako komunikační proces, informace jako artefakt, informace jako energie a informace jako identita v kyberprostoru: pátý hlas. Kniha je nejvíce zaměřená na poslední význam informace, tedy identitu v kyberprostoru. Kniha je strukturována do kapitol a je velmi snadno pochopitelná i přes to, že je  psaná anglicky (není přeložená do češtiny). Kniha má pouze okolo 90 stran a jejím cílem není probrat každý význam informace do hloubky, ale poskytnout obecný přehled cest, kterými se vydali učenci, za účelem poskytnout základní porozumění, jak mezi sebou působí myšlenky, lidé a elektronické artefakty v kyberprostoru a jaké informační efekty tyto vztahy vytváří.[7]

  • Informace je pouze v naší mysli a může být vyvolávána podněty z vnějšího prostředí

Informace jako artefakt-  informace není interpretací v lidské mysli (čtení) ale je to objekt – kniha, webová stránka, noviny

Informace jako energie - základní síla přírody – změny stavů (mentální i fyzické) – stav mentální stav člověka ale také stav oběžné dráhy satelitu

Informace jako identita v kyberprostoru: pátý hlas – kyberprostor je novou formou informací a zejména důležitých oddílů, v rámci kterých existuje v každém okamžiku, pro každého člověka, který pracuje nebo hraje online

  • Autor definuje kyberprostor jako dynamický prostor, který byl vytvořen pomocí evoluce počítačů a počítačových sítí a používáním a adaptováním těchto nástrojů lidmi.
  • Lidé jednají v kyberprostoru pomocí technických interfejsů, které podporují vstup (klávesnice) a výstup (LCD display)
  • Různé úrovně interakce – spolupráce, soutěživost, pozorování
  • Projekce, reflekse a proflekse identity v kyberprostoru
  • Elektronická média mění rozsah těchto projekcí
  • Vědomá i nevědomá projekce
  • Naše chování (informační akty) v kyberprostoru definuje a vytváří naší identitu, jak v reálném světě, tak v kyberprostoru.

Závěr – Shrnutí toho, co jsme se dozvěděli – autor představil několik pojetí informací s důrazem na to, jaké změny dělají elektronické systémy a jak dávají vznik novému fenoménu. jako je kyberprostor. Tyto změny jsou důsledkem nových typů informací v kyberprostoru. Jedním z efektů těchto změn je způsob, jakým je naše osobní identita projektována a reflektována v kyberprostoru. Výsledná proflekse reprezentuje nové druhy informací, které dávají vznik novým institucím, výpočetním agentům a dalším lidem. A ty se musíme naučit pochopit a ovládat. Tyto informace nám dávají moc, ale také přináší novou zodpovědnost za naše chování (kyberšikana apod.).[7]

Význam pro Informační vědu

Marchionini přinesl mnoho výzkumů, článků a prací zejména v oblasti digitálních knihoven, vyhledávání informací, HCI a informační architektury, měl tedy nemalý vliv na rozvoj těchto oblastí. Aktivně se zapojuje do dění na univerzitě, byl členem mnoha redakčních rad a obdržel několik prestižních v oblasti Informační vědy. Jeho články jsou stále v poměrně velkém počtu citovány. Momentálně se dělí o svoje poznatky se studenty, jako děkan na University of North Carolina v Chapel Hill.

  • Google Faculty Research Award v roce 2010 to support work on banner blindness in web search (with Felix Portnoy).
  • IBM Faculty Research Award za roky 2006-07 to work on digital video surrogate creation and metadata evaluation (with Yaxiao Song).
  • Google Research Award to develop the Information in Life Video Series (2007-08) za UNC-CH YouTube Educational Video Channel.
  • Také vedl projekt Annotating Structured Documents, podporovaný Microsoftem.[4]
