When I moved to Shoreditch I had nothing but a mattress. The windows rattled in the wind, but we built it piece by piece. New furniture is soulless, so we bartered with old dealers. Someone even nabbed a table from outside a pub. Nothing matched the walls, but that’s why it worked. Funky retro style settees seating has character, and students get that instinctively. I’ve fallen asleep in a battered armchair with a book, and every time it felt right. Markets spill chairs onto the streets, and dealers live for it.

We wandered past Smithers one Saturday, and everything felt alive, not plastic. we left with just one piece, but it’s become the throne of the house. We’ve all dragged furniture through rain. It’s part of student life. Armchairs don’t mind if you fall asleep in them. Flat-pack won’t last a term, but funky chairs grow with you. every creak is another laugh. After exams and chaos, the dodgy landlord fades away, but the vintage pieces carry the whole story.

When you think furniture, forget the catalogue shine. Make space for a classic seat, and see how it shapes your memories.
