Warden Boyd Rayward se narodil 24. června 1939 v Austrálii. "Nejvíce je znám jako životopisec Paula Otleta a historik dokumentace, ale vždy se také zajímal o moderní služby a povahu informační vědy." V průběhu života působil jako profesor na několika významných univerzitách. Dodnes působí jako emeritní profesor na University of Illonis a na University of New South Wales.

Vzdělání

Studoval na University of New South Wales v Sydney, kde získal v roce 1960 titul BA (hons), následně pokračoval ve studiu na té samé univerzitě a v roce 1964 obdržel titul Dip. Lib. Poté se přesouvá studovat do USA, kde nastupuje na University of Illinois a v roce 1965 zde získává titul MS v oboru knihovní vědy. Titul PhD získal v roce 1973 na University of Chicago, název jeho dizertační práce je „Paul Otlet, Bibliographer, Internationalist“.

Zaměstnání

V letech 1961-1964 a 1969-1970 pracuje na různých pozicích ve veřejné knihovně Nového Jižního Walesu (dnes Státní knihovna Nového Jižního Walesu). Po přesunu do USA je v období od roku 1964 do roku 1969 zaměstnán jako asistent výuky a výzkumu na University of Illinois a poté na University of Chicago. V letech 1971 a 1972 působí opět v Austrálii jako lektor na katedře knihovnictví na University of New South Wales. Ještě v roce 1972 odjíždí do Kanady a tady pracuje do roku 1974 jako odborný asistent na fakultě pro postgraduální studium knihovnictví a informační vědy na University of Western Ontario. V roce 1975 se přesouvá zpět na University of Chicago a zde působí na fakultě pro postgraduální studium knihovnictví, až do roku 1986. Tady postupně pracuje jako odborný asistent, docent, profesor a nakonec i jako děkan (1980-1986). V roce 1986 se opět vrací do rodné Austrálie na University of New South Wales, na fakultu knihovnictví, informačních a archivních studíí (po spojení přejmenována na fakultu informačních systémů, technologíí a managementu). Zde pracoval jako profesor a vedoucí školy (1986-1992), děkan fakulty odborných studií (1993-1997). Od roku 1999 až dodnes zde působí jako emeritní profesor. Od roku 2008 až dosud také působí jako emeritní profesor na University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign na fakultě pro postgraduální studium knihovnictví a informační vědy. Zde zastával také funkce hostujícího profesora (1997-1998), výzkumného profesora (2000-2004) a profesora (2004-2007).

Význam pro informační vědu/knihovnictví

Jak již bylo řečeno W. B. Rayward se proslavil zejména jako životopisec belgického právníka, spisovatele a zakladatele dokumentalistiky Paula Otleta. Nicméně se zdaleka nejedná o jediný Raywardův přínos pro informační vědu a knihovnictví. Je autorem celé řady monografií, knih a článků zabývajících se rozličnými tématy, které se vyznačují pozoruhodnou konzistencí. Mnohá jeho díla jsou dobře známá a často citovaná.

V rámci své kariéry v tomto vědním odvětví se již přes čtyřicet let významně podílí nejen v oblasti historie, ale také ve vzdělávání informačních profesionálů a knihovníků. Do značné míry se taktéž angažuje v rozvoji informační vědy a knihovnictví. Rayward se dále zabývá současnými knihovnickými a muzejními službami a samotnou povahou informační vědy.

Méně známý a tedy i hůře zdokumentovaný je jeho vliv na své kolegy. Vždy se jim však snažil být podporou a to jednak formou korespondence, tak i pořádáním konferencí a budováním neformálních sítí.

Získaná ocenění

Roku 2014 byl Raywardovi slavnostně předán tzv. „Festschrift", což by se dalo přeložit jako pamětní či slavnostní spis. Na jeho tvorbě se podíleli jeho kolegové profesoři Alistair Black z GSLIS a Profesor Charles van den Heuvel z University of Amsterdam. Tato pocta byla W. B. Raywardovi udělena za jeho odborné příspěvky v oblasti informační vědy a knihovnictví.

V roce 2004 byla W. B. Raywardovi udělena cena ASIS & T Research Award za výjimečné příspěvky výzkumu v oblasti informační vědy.
