Doktorka Dervinová získala bakalářský titul v roce 1960 na Cornell University. Magisterský titul v roce 1968 a PhD titul v roce 1971 získala díky výzkumu v oblasti komunikací na University of Michigan. V roce 2000 byla také oceněna titulem PhD v oblasti sociálních věd na University of Helsinki.
