Frederick Wilfrid Lancaster

Frederick Wilfrid Lancaster (* 4. září 1933 Stanley, Velká Británie) je americký informační vědec narozený ve Velké Británii. Zabýval se především získáváním informací a indexováním.[1]

Učitel, badatel, spisovatel, konzultant v oblasti knihovnictví a informační vědy, přispívá k profesi jako organizátor konference, a editor časopisu Library Trends.[2]

Život

Narodil se ve Stanley (pravděpodobně v Durham County, poblíž Newcastlu), ale v roce 1959 emigroval do Spojených států amerických. Vědeckou kariéru zahájil v roce 1963.

Práce

Jeho práce na hodnocení - knihoven, systémů vyhledávání informací a informačních systémů obecně, indexace a abstrakci struktury, indexů a časopisů, on-line vyhledávání, uživatelů a jejich potřeb, vzdělávacích programů, knihovních fondů a informačních služeb , o hodnocení jako nástroj řízení - je skutečně monumentální. Celkem nějakých šedesát jeho publikací zaměřených na tuto oblast.

Nejprve spolupracoval s Walterem F. Johanningsmeierem[3] na zhodnocení projektu SHARP (Ships Analysis and Retrieval Project)[4]. Hodnocení systému MEDLARS, určeného pro systémovou analýzu a vyhledávání lékařských časopisů v United States National Library of Medicine, největší lékařské knihovně na světě. Způsobil velký dopad na vědeckou komunitu. Byla použita metodika Cyrila Cleverdona [5], navržená v projektu Cranfield [6], v letech 1966-1967. Lancaster objasnil problémy, kvůli kterým vyhledávání informací selhalo, indexování, vyhledávací strategie a interakce uživatelského systému, které tvoří až 87% produkovaných chyb. Závěry této práce sloužily k porovnání efektivity vyhledávání informací v pozdějších pracích, jako třeba v projektu SMART vedeném Gerardem Saltonem ([7]). Na základě výsledků tohoto projektu a také dalšího výzkumu, navrhl Lancaster (společně s Emily Gallup Fayen) 6 kritérií pro hodnocení úspěšnosti systémů vyhledávání informací:

5. Uživatelská náročnost
6. Formát zobrazení

Ralph R. Shaw Award of the American Library Association On byl také udělil cenu Americká knihovní asociace (ALA) v roce 1978 pro druhé vydání Knihovna hodnocení, Dílo považováno za jedno z nejdůležitějších za posledních 25 let v oblasti Informace a Dokumentace. Tuto cenu získal potom ješte jedno. V 1988 obdržel cenu Award of Merit udělovanou organizací ASIS&T již od roku 1964 osobnostem, které učinily pozoruhodný příspěvek oblasti informační vědy, včetně vyjádření nových myšlenek, vytváření nových zařízení, vývoje lepších technologií a vynikající služby informační vědě. První držitel ceny ASIS Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award. Indeed, the 1969 report on the evaluation of MEDLARS won an ASIS award as the best paper of the year
