Dr. Rodney Paul Sturges (*1945) je čestným profesorem na univerzitě v Loughborough v Anglii a mimořádným profesorem na univerzitě v Pretorii v Jihoafrické republice. Zabývá se řadou otázek v informační vědě, s důrazem na rozvojový svět a informační etiku. Také se věnuje teorii knihovnické práce, o níž napsal několik prací a je v tomto oboru uznávaným odborníkem.

Život

V letech 1984 - 1985 učil na Univerzitě Botswana a od té doby je stále zapojen do Spolku afrických knihovníků (African Librarianship) a řešení informačních problémů v Africe. 1997-2001 byl konzultantem v Radě Evropy pro svobodu projevu a veřejných přístupových bodů síťových informací. Vedl projekt financovaný Zdroji na soukromí v prostředí digitální knihovny (Resource (now MLA) on Privacy in the Digital Library Environment) v době 2000 až 2002. V letech 2003-9 byl členem Mezinárodní federace knihovnických asociací / International Federation of Library Associations’ (IFLA) ve Výboru pro svobodný přístup k informacím a svobodu projevu / Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression (FAIFE).

Dílo

Jeho články jsou citovány více než 400x, ImpF 33.6 (podle [1]). Pravidelně publikuje v Emerald Group Publishing Limited. Celkem napsal více než 150 článků, zpráv a knih zabývajících se řadou otázek informační vědy, s důrazem na rozvojový svět a informační etiku. Zřejmě nejvýznamnější je jeho kniha International Encyclopedia of Information and Library Science, vydaná roku 1998 a s již vyšlou druhou edicí.

Paul Sturges je i skvělým řečníkem. Často přednáší na konferencích, z českých například studentská konference BOBCATSSS 2015 v Brně. V roce 2015 se také zúčastnil konferencí v Jimmě (Ethiopia), Edinburghu (UK), Sarajevu (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Tokiu a Kyotu (Japan), Kapském Městě (South Africa), Tallinnu (Estonia), Zadaru (Croatia).

Členství v organizacích a společnostech

Byl také členem poroty Nadace pro přístup k učení (Access to Learning Award (ATLA)) v letech 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Aktuální činnost a aktivity

V současné době je příznivcem CILIP, Chartered Institute for Library and Information Proffessionals. http://www.cilip.org.uk [2]

Úspěchy

V roce 2010 byl jmenován důstojníkem Řádu britského impéria / Order of the British Empire (OBE) za služby pro knihovny ve Velké Británii a v zámoří a v roce 2011 mu byla udělena medaile IFLA za velký přínos IFLA, mezinárodní vedení a prosazování základních hodnot IFLA, tedy svobodného přístupu k informacím a svobodného vyjadřování.[3]
