Život

Michael Buckland se narodil a vyrostl v Anglii. Jeho první praktická zkušenost s knihovnou byla jako praktikant v Bodleian Library na Univerzitě v Oxfordu po dokončení studií historie na této univerzitě. Profesní kvalifikaci v knihovnictví získal na University of Sheffield v roce 1965, následně začal pracovat v knihovně na Lancasterské Univerzitě rok poté co byla založena. Na této univerzitě byl v letech 1967 až 1972 odpovědný za běžné denní povinnosti v knihovní výzkumné skupině (Library Research Unit) kde byla provedea řada studií týkajících se používání knih, jejich dostupnosti a her pro řízení knihoven. V této době také získal svůj Ph.D. titul.

V roce 1972 se přestěhoval do Spojených států, kde se stal zástupcem ředitele pro technické služby na Purdue University v Indianě. Od roku 1976 se jeho domovem stala School of Library & Information Studies na Berkeley. Jako hostující profesor navštívil Rakousko, Austrálii, Norsko a Švédsko.

Mezi jeho zájmy patří bibliografický přístup a podpora hledání: bibliografie, katalogizace, filtrování, indexování, metadata, vyhledávání. Reprezentace kulturního dědictví. Dějiny a teorie dokumentace. Služby akademických knihoven. Digitální knihovny.

Na UC Berkeley se zaměřuje především na Plánování v knihovnách a jejich řízení (management). Dále se věnuje akademickým knihovnám a vyhledávání informací.

"Profesor Buckland v úspěšné knize odhaluje kariéru velkého vědce, který, stejně jako mnoho z jeho německých a zahraničních kolegů, padl za oběť nacionalistické šílenství, které prakticky zničilo německou kulturu a vědu mezi 1933 a 1945. Emanuel Goldberg se konečně dostal pochopení a uznání, že jeho tvůrčí génius si zasloužil, ale nebylo možno v jeho celém životě.
