Reader response theory (teorie reakce čtenáře) nebo také reader response criticism je teorií, která se zabývá vztahem mezi literárním dílem a čtenářem. Tato teorie se různými přístupy snaží zkoumat a hledat vysvětlení rozdílů mezi reakcemi čtenářů na literární díla.[1] Vznikla v 70. – 80. letech 20. století jako opak k přístupům formalistů (Formalism) a nových kritiků (The New Criticism), kteří se zabývají výkladem literatury samotné a na čtenářův příspěvek k dílu neberou ohled.
Podle Reader response theory je literární dílo, např. báseň, spojením čtenáře, jeho zkušeností a samotného textu. Louise Rosenblatt uvádí, že čtenář si do díla přináší osobnostní rysy, vzpomínky, aktuální náladu a fyzickou kondici a to všechno se odráží v čtenářově přispěvku k dílu. Čtenářova reakce na text je tak vždy jedinečná a neopakovatelná.[2]
Vztahem mezi čtenářem a literárním dílem se zabývala již v roce 1938 právě Louise Rosenblatt, její kniha však byla opomenuta a znovu objevena vydána až v 90. letech. Proto se za počátek této teorie označuje rok 1980, kdy vyšly tři stěžejní díla zabývající se touto tématikou:[2]
