 Hildreth začal výzkum na začátku 80 let, kdy výzkumy v oblasti OPAC začínaly být stále rozsáhlejší a byly financovány Council on Library Resources (CLR). Hildreth měl za úkol sumarizovat studia a naznačovat nové směry a také pracovat na nomenklatuře. Jeho činnosti byly směrovány k pokroku pomocí jeho zájmu a zaměření na uživatel-počítač interface. OCLC vybralo Hildretha, aby přinesl systém a jednotu do mnoha výzkumných zpráv. Jako projektový manažer zaplnil informační a jazykovou mezeru a výsledky publikoval v díle zvaném „Online Public Access Catalogs: The User Interface“. Mnohá studia byly zaměřeny na faktory v online systémech na vyhledávání informací, ale Hildrethovo úsilí směřovalo k zjištění, které systémové faktory v uživatelském prostředí mají schopnost ovlivnit úspěšnost vyhledávání koncového uživatele.
