Alan Gilchrist působil v letech 1958-1960 jako poručík v třetím pěším regimentu [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffs_(Royal_East_Kent_Regiment) Buffs], což byl formálně Královský východní regiment z Kentu (Royal East Kent Regiment). Dále pracoval 4 roky ve firmě [https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._J._Heinz_Company Heinz] jako asistent vedoucího, kde začal svou kariéru v oboru informační vědy. /kniha/ Potom začal pracovat v Aslibu, kde pracoval ve výzkumném oddělení, většinou se soustředil na analýzy systémů a na ručně ovládané systémy pro vyhledávání informací.<ref name="IKO">Organisers - 2017. V roce 2006 získal čestný doktorát od Univerzity v Brightonu za služby informační vědě. Dále je čestným členem[[Chartered_Institute_of_Library_and_Information_Professionals|Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals]], ISCO ve Velké Británii a také člen [https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Královská_společnost_umění,_řemesel_a_obchodu Královské společnosti umění, řemesel a obchodu] ([https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Society_of_Arts Royal society of Arts]). V roce 2001 dostal zlatou medaili Profesora Kaula. Také získal cenu Aslib-Emerald Award za nejlepší příspěvek o informačním managementu zveřejněném v časopise Aslib-Emerald Journals za rok 2003. Jedním z jeho největších úspěchů je editování časopisu [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journal_of_Information_Science Journal of Information Science], dodnes je jeho emeritním editorem.

Alan Gilchrist byl se svou ženou před pár lety v Brně na představení [https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Příhody_lišky_Bystroušky Příhody lišky Bystroušky] v malém divadle a na venkovním poslechu [https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glagolská_mše_(Janáček) Glagolské mše]. Brno se mu velmi líbilo, zvlášť [https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kostel_svatého_Jakuba_Staršího_(Brno) Kostel sv. Jakuba Staršího], který byl podle jeho tvrzení jeden z nejhezčích kostelů, které kdy viděl.
