Robert Arthur Fairthorne (1. červenec 1904, Abingdon, Berkshire - 24. května 2000 Farnborough, Hampshire) byl matematik a průkopník v oboru informační vědy. 

Život

Rané dětství a studium

Robert Arthur Fairthorne se narodil 1. Července 1904 v Abingtonu na Temži v Anglii. Jeho otec byl inženýr a matka uznávaná virtuózka. Už během svého dětství projevoval zájem o technologie a nadšení pro sci-fi a fantasy.

Během První světové války nastoupil do internátní školy v Eastbourne. Mezi léty 1918–1921 navštěvoval Bradfield College a the University of London, zde získal titul B. Sc. (Bacheleor in Science) v matematice. Záhy poté se v roce 1923 přidal k Royal Engineers, kde se zabýval vývojem technologie zbraní.

O čtyři roky později přestoupil k Royal Aircraft Establishment (R.A.E.). Soustředil se zde na výzkum konstrukcí letounů a následné uplatnění v praxi. Dalším milníkem během působení v RAE bylo založení nového oddělení, které se později přejmenovalo na Mathematical Services Department. Aktivně zde navštěvoval knihovnu, aby se mu v roce 1933 podařilo obdržet external degree, opět v oboru matematiky. Tím ale jeho zájem o knihovnu neskončil, naopak se začal angažovat jako tajemník v knihovnické komisi. Později se věnoval převedení matematických principů do animovaných filmů, které tvořil pomocí analogových počítačů.
