Život

Raya Fidel se narodila 18. ledna 1945 v Izraeli. Studovala na bakalářském stupni na univerzitě v Tel Avivu a pokračovala na Hebrew university v Jeruzalémě, kde získala magisterský titul. Na studia v Izraeli navázala na University of Maryland, kde v roce 1982 získala titul Ph D. V USA pokračovala ve svém akademickém působení na Center for Human-Information Interaction na University of Washington

Dr. Raya Fidel přinesla odborné znalosti v oblasti informačního chování, ukládání a vyhledávání informací a organizace znalostí.

Dr. Fidel byla ředitelkou Center for Human-Information Interaction na University of Washington.

Pole, i když není všeobecně známé mimo tradiční knihovnu a informační vědu, se vynořilo z mnoha vyhledávacích prostorů, mnoha plynulostí a informací digitálního věku. V takovém prostředí mohou uživatelé vyhledávat a komunikovat s informacemi prostřednictvím různých zařízení a rozhraní. [6]

Human-information interaction (HII) is an information-age subject ...that investigates how humans interact with information ...its subfield human information behavior (HIB) is a flourishing, active discipline. Yet despite their obvious relevance to the design of information systems, these research areas have had almost no impact on systems design (Fidel, 2012). As an emerging branch of information science, HII is concerned with how human beings (i.e., searchers) interact with information. The discipline adopts an information-centric rather than computer-centric approach as seen in human-computer interaction (Lucas, 2000). Clearly, information systems would be more effective if their design were informed by a deeper understanding of our users' interactions with information. HII provides a way to test theories of cognitive architectures and models to predict effective information design. Fidel (2012) says that she uses systems-based approaches to examine HII and begins with three basic propositions: 1) that the purpose of HII research is to improve the interaction between users and information 2) a holistic approach is needed to understand the field and 3) that all information systems have goals (i.e., to help users find the information they need to do their work).

Gershon was the first to coin the phrase human information interaction (1995) placing more focus on "how human beings interact with, relate to, and process information regardless of the medium connecting the two". The field, though not widely-known outside of traditional library and information science, has emerged out of the many search spaces, multiple fluencies and information of the digital age. HII can be distinguished from other information disciplines by its emphasis on highly interactive interfaces, user-centered methods of design and a deeper sensitivity to the dynamic, multi-channel information-seeking behaviours of knowledge workers in the 21st century. The complexity of information interaction is not very well-established in typical models of human-computer interaction. However, HCI approaches are meant to be used for the design of software applications and interfaces where designers can exercise more control over the form and function of those appliances; conversely, HII approaches are optimal for networked information systems where control might be sacrificed for interoperability. In such environments, users may find and interact with information through a variety of devices and interfaces. The emphasis therefore shifts from interface to information.

Cognitive Work Analysis

Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA)[1] [2][3][4] is a framework that was developed to model complex sociotechnical work systems. The framework models different types of constraints, building a model of how work could proceed within a given work system. The focus on constraints separates the technique from other approaches to analysis that aim to describe how work is actually conducted, or prescribe how it should be conducted.

The CWA approach can be used to describe the constraints imposed by the purpose of a system, its functional properties, the nature of the activities that are conducted, the roles of the different actors, and their cognitive skills and strategies. Rather than offer a prescribed methodology, the CWA framework instead acts as a toolkit that can be used either individually or in combination with one another, depending upon the analysis needs. These tools are divided between phases. The exact names and scopes of these phases differ slightly dependent on the scope of the analysis; however, the overall scope remains largely the same. As defined by Vicente (1999), the CWA framework comprises five different phases; work domain analysis, control task (or activity) analysis, strategies analysis, social organisation and co-operation analysis, and worker competencies analysis.

The different tools within the CWA framework have been used for a plethora of different purposes, including system modelling,[5][6][7] system design, process design, training needs analysis, training design & evaluation, interface design and evaluation,[8] information requirements specification, tender evaluation, team design, and error management training design. Despite its origin within the nuclear power domain, the CWA applications referred to above have taken place in a wide range of different domains, including naval, military, aviation, driving, and health care domains.

It is especially difficult to prescribe a strict procedure for the CWA framework. In its true form, the framework is used to provide a description of the constraints within a domain. This description can then be used to address specific research and design aims.

Cognitive work analysis (CWA) is a process used to examine human-information interactions, and is discussed at length by Fidel (2012). In fact, CWA offers an ecological approach to design, and examines forces in an environment that shape human interaction with information. For the purposes of clarity, an 'information system' is any system, whether intellectual or computerized, that facilitates and supports interactions between a searcher's work context and information. In a library context, a branch website might be viewed as an information system; also, an online public access catalogue or online index or database. When searching for information, how do searchers search? Typically, CWA evaluates an information system and develops recommendations for the design of the interface. A cognitive evaluation is based on an analysis of the information behaviours of users in the context of their work.

The assumption in CWA is that an information system will be used within an ecological context of affordances and constraints. Searchers will use the system and act in response to unanticipated situations. The purpose is to identify and map the constraints so that systems design will account for them. The outcome of this process is to support the ultimate design of the "system". Those who undertake CWA adhere to functional (ecological) interface design principles. A functional interface is one where information is structured in a way that reflects activities so that searchers can assimilate information and transition seamlessly. In order to design systems that work well with human actors, one should understand 1) the work searchers do, 2) their information behaviours, 3) the context in which they work, and 4) the reasons for their actions. CWA thus takes a work-centred, rather than a user-centred, approach to design.

Některé rozdíly v hledání informací a sdílení odrážejí rozdíly v kontextech práce. Naše zjištění naznačují, že existující nástroje pro týmovou spolupráci by mohly účinněji podporovat získávání společných informací. [12]
  • Information retrieval is generally considered an individual activity, and information retrieval research and tools reflect this view. As digitally mediated communication and information sharing increase, collaborative information retrieval merits greater attention and support. We describe field studies of information gathering in two design teams that had very different products, disciplinary backgrounds, and tools. We found striking similarities in the kinds of information they sought and the methods used to get it. For example, each team sought information about design constraints from external sources. A common strategy was to propose ideas and request feedback, rather than to ask directly for recommendations. Some differences in information seeking and sharing reflected differences in work contexts. Our findings suggest some ways that existing team collaboration tools could support collaborative information retrieval more effectively.Tučný text
