Geoffrey Charles Bowker žije v Irvine v Kalifornii. Je profesorem informatiky na University of California v Irvine. Jeho práce se zaměřuje především na vývoj "cyberinfrastruktur" ve vědě. Zajímá se také o historii geologie ve 20. století, kybernetice a vědeckém prostředí. Bowker spolupracoval také s americkou socioložkou Susan Leigh Star. 

Vzdělání

V roce 1975 získal titul B. A. (Bachelor of Arts) na Australian National University (Australská národní univerzita) v oboru Historie, specializace na britské 19. století. Roku 1984 získal titul PhD. na University of Melbourne, v oboru historie a filozofie vědy. Ve své práci se zaměřil na téma "Sociální a vědecké vnímání času v Anglii a Francii 1830."

Život a kariéra

V roce 1975 začal Geoff pracovat jako úředník v australském archivu, kde prováděl hodnocení a popis archivů tří vládních útvarů a dohlížel na jejich sběr. V letech 1976 - 1978 byl učitelem angličtiny. Učil angličtinu na základní úrovni, ale věnoval se i vzdělávání dospělých. V období 1978 - 1980 působil jako poradce pro výuku v Kamerunu. Roku 1984 vyučoval histografii vědy na katedře dějin a filozofie na University of Melbourne a pořádal přednášky na téma sociálních věd. V letech 1985 - 1988 působil v Centru sociálních inovací. Tam se zabýval katalogizací archivů a sestavováním počítačového indexu. Během roku 1988 pak pracoval jako učitel oboru Úvod do historie vědy na pařížské Sorbonně. Roku 1989 se stal asistentem na University of Californa, kde také vyučoval kurzy historie vědy a techniky ve 20. století. V témže roce působil jako poradce společnosti ADEST ( Association for Mesure des Sciences et des Techniques,Paris), byl organizátorem sérií francouzsko-anglických seminářů o intelektuálních investicích. Rovněž vydal knihu sérií těchto seminářů. Ve stejném období pracoval jako výzkumný pracovník v Centru sociálních inovací (Ecole des Mines) v Paříži. 

V roce 1990 pracoval jako vědecký pracovník na katedře sociologie University of Keele v oboru historie kybernetiky a historie lékařské informatiky. Zde vyučoval sociologické kurzy. V letech 1991 - 1993 byl výzkumným pracovníkem v institutu John Rylands na University of Manchaster. Podílel se na vývoji databáze do katalogu archivů Jodrell Bank a dohlížel pak na přenos těchto archivů do univerzitní knihovny John Rylands Library v Manchasteru.

Ve stejném obodbí, tedy v letech1991 - 1993, se stal Geoffrey C. Bowker ředitelem Národního archivu pro historii výpočetní techniky, opět na University of Manchaster. Tam se zabýval konsolidací sbírky výpočetních archivů, vývoj teoretických nástrojů pro analýzu elektronických archivů a zabýval se i dotazy týkající se historie výpočetní techniky. Součástí této pozice byly také výzkumné projekty v intelektuální, technologické a institucionální historii kybernetiky jako interdisiplinárního předmětu a v kognitivních přístupech k archivům řízení. Vyučoval historii vědeckých a technologických studií. Výsledkem této práce pak bylo především jeho trvalé postavení.

V období1992 - 1993 navštívil také Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois (Absolventská škola knihovnictví a informační vědy v Illinois). Roku 1994 (květen - červen) byl hostujícím profeseorem na katedře informatiky, Aarhuis  University, Denmark. Až do roku 1998 byl napřed asistentem a později docentem na Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois (Absolventská škola knihovnictví a informační vědy v Illinois). Zabýval se zde také výzkumnými projekty v oboru dějin a sociologie - Mezinárodní klasifikace nemocí, Klasifikace ošetřovatelských intervencí a organizační paměť. V letech 1998 - 1999 působil v National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Poté, co byl přizván do prezidentské Komise poradců pro vědu a technologie, pod-komise pro biodiversitu, se začal věnovat výzkumu informatiky na poli biodiversity a životního prostředí. Od roku2000 působil v Supercomputer Center v San Diegua od roku2001 na doktorském programu v kognitivní vědě. V letech 2002 - 2009 pak jako profesor v oboru komunikace a studia životního prostředí na katedře komunikace na University of San Diego. V letech 2005 - 2009 byl výkonným ředitelem v Centru pro vědu, technologii a společnost (Santa Clara University, Center for Science, Technology, and Society). V letech 2009 - 2011 byl profesorem a vysokoškolských učitelem na škole informačních věd Univesity of Pittsburgh a od roku 2012 je profesorem, ředitelem hodnoty a designu na School of Information and ComputerScience, University of California, Irvine (Škola informatiky a výpočetní techniky).
